Answers to Unsatisfied Skateboaring Queries

Often people type something in to Google, arrive at this site and don't seem to find what they're after. Below I try to find the answers to some of these unsatisfied queries.

Cool things that a beginner skateboarder can do
There are many cool things that you can do as a beginner. One of the most fun is taking your trucks off and playing around on your board in your house. I wrote about big spins and "corkscrews" in my article on carpet skating.

Difference between frontside flip and 180 kickflip
"Frontside flip" is short for "frontside 180 kickflip". There is often no difference between a frontside flip and a 180 kickflip, since most 180 kickflips are done frontside. However, a 180 kickflip could be done backside, then it would be a backside flip.

Did anyone land the leap of faith
No. At least not according to people commenting on my Leap of Faith post. What's more, it's now impossible to land because bigger walls have been built at the top.

Do u kick flip off ur toes
Yes - at least, you should kickflip with a flick of your toes for best results. See how to kickflip

Download the mutt: how to skateboard and not kill yourself
You can't download that book here, you can however read a review of Rodney Mullens book - In my view, it's worth buying.

Explain why skateboard turns left and right using force
Phew, that's a big ask for someone not well versed in physics. I think your best bet is the tic-tac diagrams in skateboarding for beginners part 2.

How did rodney mullen learn to skate board?
You guys sure are interested in Rodney Mullen. How did Rodney learn to skateboard? A lot of perseverance and creativity. The story is told in his book.

How many people are goofy footed
17,890. Seriously, I don't know. You might as well ask "how many people are left handed" - the answer to that is around 12%. In my experience about this many skateboarders (that is, 1 in 10) are goofy footed. Though being left handed doesn't mean you're goofy, or vice versa. I'm right handed, and goofy.

Your Comments

I really appreciate your approach to the site. I have found it to be very informative and encouraging at the same time. Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!

I really like how you mentioned how so many have trouble finding what they want on google, myself being one of them. My Question is if you know any websites that have lists of the the real world spots that inspire the different levels and gaps of the tony hawk series. i.e. the leap of faith at point loma HS in San Diego or the ledges by the stage in school 2 which is at Rancho Alamitos HS in Garden Grove CA. just to name the ones i know.

Your definition of an indy air is incorrect. The entry describes a frontside grab. An indy air is a frontside grab on an otherwise backside air. If you're not turning backside, it's just a frontside grab. It's the opposite of a lien air.

P.S. A lien isn't a melon unless the front leg is boned out straight.

Hi Brian, thanks for the comments.

Yeah the vert stuff in the tricktionary is a little shaky at the moment. Neither myself nor Tony Gale are/were vert skaters.

Fortunately soon anyone will have a chance to right our wrongs because of a new project I'm working on that will essentially make the tricktionary "open source". I hope you will consider lending your expertise to that when it goes live in the next few months.

Hey I would like to know how to pop-shove it for a beginner and kick flip. Not just a beginner but someone who even sucks at ollie. I need step by step in very detailed. Thx

Zach, theres a whole article on how to kickflip, its one of the featured articles... so, go check it out. Also just youtube a shuvit tricktip, theres PLENTY.

This site is pretty goddamn awesome man, i love it, helped expand my bag o' tricks alot. I'm an english skater myself, over in Bristol, well near to anyway. i tend to lean toward freestyle myself, not many local parks or spots, so the situation kinda lends itself to freestyle. anyway enough rambling; keep up the good work!

Do you know how many of us boarders there are in the uk.My mate matty reckons theres about 5 million, is he right?

Posted by Jimmy on 04th of January 2010

5 million? Well, let's break this down. There are 60 million people in the UK, so your friend Matty is saying that 1 of every 12 people, or 8%, skates. That's pretty high.

But wait, almost half of that 60 million are aged 30 or older. How many skaters do you know who are older than 30? Not many I'll bet. For the purposes of working this out, we should discount those. That leaves a pool of 30 million people.

Now, in terms of percentages 8% is *way* too high. Think about it - out of all the people you know very few are skateboarders. Obviously that is going to vary from person to person, but on the whole I very much doubt it is more than 0.5% - 1%.

So, somewhere between 150,000 and 300,000 would be my guess.
